The East India Company was the first and biggest organisation that dominated trade in the 17th and 18th century. It ruled over India and used brute military force to conquer the Mughal Empire.

Founded in London in 1600, it monopolised the import of spices, tea and exotic goods from India. In one of the great ironies of history, it has now been bought by an Indian entrepreneur named Sanjiv Mehta.

Sanjiv Mehta

During the 1600s, Queen Elizabeth I granted over 200 English merchants the right to trade in the East Indies. Known as the East India Company, they became responsible for bringing tea, coffee and luxury goods to Europe, while also trading in spices across the world.

The East India Company’s empire covered much of the globe, with a sizeable army to protect its interests and control key trading posts in India. The company is a symbol of colonialism, and many patriotic Indians are uncomfortable with it.

In 2005, Mumbai-born entrepreneur Sanjiv Mehta procured the name of the company and transmuted it into a customer brand focused on luxury teas, coffees and food. He is now inviting fellow Indians to join him as custodians of the brand, through investment and helping it to grow in new areas.

Mehta says he is overwhelmed by “a huge feeling of redemption”. The brand has been transformed into one that will “tomorrow’s India can build upon.” With a flagship store in London opening in March, and plans for a series of events to celebrate the life of Mahatma Gandhi, he is confident the company will thrive.

The East India Company

From its humble beginnings as a trading venture in sixteenth-century England, The East India Company grew into an empire that governed large parts of Asia. By 1874 it was the world’s most powerful corporation.

The EIC grew through a system of establishing small bases, or factories, on India’s coasts. These were staffed by representatives, called ‘factors’, who could source and negotiate for goods from Indian artisans.

History

During this period, a series of great temples were built in Bhubaneshwar, Konarak and Khahurajo. The Gupta period also saw the development of new styles of clothes. Women wore antariyas that were made of linen, white cotton, jute and muslin. These were fastened to their kayabandh at the center.
